BCFL Formulas

to determine Policy, Public Forum, and LD Qualifying Tournament Participants

These guidelines cover debate events (Policy and Lincoln Douglas Debate)

  1. Students/teams defined as "qualifying" have competed in at least 9 rounds in one event during the 6 qualifying tournaments.
  2. Students are selected and ranked based upon the results from their 3 best tournaments from the 6 qualifying tournaments.
  3. No students/teams may "break" or be given a fixed seed in the qualifying tournament until the completion of the fourth scheduled tournament.
  4. In Lincoln Douglas Debate, rankings are determined by won-loss record then best total points.
  5. In Policy Debate, team rankings are determined by best won-loss record, highest speaker points, then lowest ranks.
  6. In policy debate there are other specific considerations,
  1. The total number of students invited to the national qualifying tournament will be determined according to the following formula.
  2. In the event of a cancellation resulting the running of fewer than 5 tournaments, the executive board of BCFL will double the results of the team’s/debater’s best tournament to determine final seedings.
